Description
The Octopus gem (https://github.com/thiagopradi/octopus) is the most commonly used library for sharding and replication with ActiveRecord. The library is a result of work done during the 2010 Ruby Summer of Code, and completes seven years of existence in 2017. In this talk, I will talk about how the project started, how its development was carried out and what lessons were learned during the seven years of existence. These lessons will cover a few different areas, from ActiveRecord internals to management details of an open-source project.
Thiago Pradi: Thiago Pradi is a software developer who fell in love with Ruby on Rails nine years ago. Since then, Thiago worked on projects using Ruby and Rails in a variety of areas, including e-commerce, tax management, and applicant tracking. He currently works as a team leader at JobScore (www.jobscore.com). Thiago also loves research and science, having a master’s degree in computer science from UFPR and having done research in the area of medical informatics. In his spare time, Thiago loves to read about science, walk with his wife and his pug, and calibrate his sights on CS: GO.
